1% rule of online communities
This is an emerging rule for online communities. It states that:
- 1% of the users are content-creators
- 9% of the users are interactors, and
- 90% of the users are lurkers
In other words, if you get 100 people together in an online community (youTube, digg, flickr, etc), then only 1 user (or 1%) would actually create the online content!
9 users would interact with the content (comment on it, offer feedback or different views) and thereby add value to it.
Remaining 90 users would just view or consume the content, and not participate at all.
